Samsung launches Galaxy S5 in 125 countries today

Samsung's latest flagship is finally on sale, as today the device is available in 125 markets globally. This marks the largest launch of a Samsung smartphone ever - more than double that of the Galaxy S4, which initiated sales in 60 countries a year ago.

The Galaxy S5 goes on sale, fittingly, with Samsung's new line of Gear wearables - the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit - which were introduced alongside the flagship at MWC back in February.
The Galaxy S5 flagship has been one of the most anticipated products of the season, with a 5.1-inch fullHD Super AMOLED display, quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16/32GB of expandable storage, a 2,800mAh battery, running on Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's custom TouchWiz overlay.
Also introduced are a boatload of new features, including fingerprint scanner, heart rate sensor and S Health 3.0, and IP67 dust and water resistance.
Look for the Galaxy S5 alongside the new Gear wearables at local and online retailers starting today. Meanwhile, for more on the Galaxy S5

Sony outs SIM free Xperia Z1

So you want an Xperia Z1, but don't want to sign a contract? Not a problem, Sony's got your back.
They've released an unlocked version of their popular Z1 handset that fully supports US LTE speeds on both T-Mobile and AT&T's networks. It should also function just fine on Canadian LTE networks as well, if you're planning on spending some time (or if you live) in the great, white North.

How much does the no-strings-attached model of Sony's high-end smartphone cost? A lot: $620. This price seems very high, especially when you consider that the model debuted in September 2013.
The fact that Sony is offering the phone unlocked, however, is indicative of a trend that the company has been making recently towards openness. They've released the code for the software kernels on previous phones, making it easier for Android tinkerers to play around with their devices and customize them as they see fit. It makes sense for them to do so: one of the biggest selling points (that Android fans won't let you forget) is how customizable Google's mobile OS can be. It seems like a good move on Sony's part that they're letting their consumer base know that they're “hip” to the whole smartphone customization movement.
At $620, we don't take it that this version of the Z1 will be flying off the shelves, but it's good to see that Sony is offering it free from contract and sim locks.
So you want an Xperia Z1, but don't want to sign a contract? Not a problem, Sony's got your back. Tsize: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
